CORR Primm Valley May 17th & 18th Recap
|
Round two of the Championship Offroad Racing series was held at the Nevada state line Primm Valley Resort and Casino on May 17 th and 18 th . After the negative exposure the last race in Pomona endured, some changes were made. The Primm race flowed much better, and didn’t have the same dust problem, and despite the Nevada heat the turnout was good. Evan Evans has made the decision to run both WSORR and CORR series, and was seen in his older Potowatomi Chevy. “we spread ourselves a little thinner than normal, but this is the NASCAR of offroad racing, and we want to be with the best, and this is where the best is” says Evans. “This truck needs to race next weekend, so were gonna hold back just a little bit on Saturday, but Sunday were gonna let the rains loose and let all the horses run”. Unfortunately the never give up attitude of Evans wasn’t enough as they were a DNF both days. The great Rickey Johnson teamed up with Steve Barlow’s Red Bull Team this year and he has started the season off with a bang. Saturday started off poorly for Rickey as he spun out and was down to 21st place, and came back with an astonishing victory. “It was like a 15 lap Mickey Thompson race; you usually don’t see that much action”. Rickey went on to discuss the frustration of spinning out “I just kept cussin and yellin at myself, but I told myself to never give up, if you give up you need to give up your seat. You always give 100%, I give it 100% always. It takes the whole team to make us as fast as we are, but we can’t fail one more time this season mechanically.” Rickey was happy with Saturday’s results, however Sunday didn’t go well for him. He still feels confident that he can take the cake this season, he just can’t suffer from any more mechanical problems. Adrian Cenni lead in the beginning of the Saturday Pro-4 race, but when he came into the last turn of the 5th lap he hit the bank too hard launching him into the air over 20 feet on top of the fence. Over two stories high and completely sideways it seemed that a spectacular crash seemed inevitable, however he somehow landed wheels down and remained in first. He then had to pull off due to a mechanical failure. However after Herbst’s truck caught on fire a mandatory yellow went up Cenni got back into the race 3-4 laps down. It was said that Cenni got in the way of Scott Douglas (Who had bad blood from a previous race) and Johnny Greaves, thus resulting in a large controversy after the race. The facts are still unclear as to whether or not a fight broke out in the hot pits and the Tree Bar, and even Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department being involved. What is known is Cenni was given a sizeable fine to race the next day, and in a large upset decided not to race Sunday. It seems unclear as to whether or not Cenni will continue to race CORR, or even be allowed. It seems that this season may belong to Rob MacCacheren, on Sunday he flew off of the 1st turn and out of the stadium, only to re-enter and eventually win the race. It was a spectacular example of his unparalleled skill both in the desert and on the short course. After a disappointing season last year it seems that MacCacheren has found his place and is ready to win before he gets taken out of a race from mechanical failures which happened so often last season. Rick Huesman driving the Fabtech Toyota Pro-4 had a rough day Saturday spinning out, however redeemed himself Sunday when he went on to win, placing him in first in points. “There was a lot going on through my mind, thinking about pot holes and keeping the Toyos from getting a flat, but they were working so good out there that I don’t think they could get a flat. But you’re wondering about the people behind you, just tryin to run the smooth lines without goin over your head.” The last time Rick was at Primm he had a horrible crash, so coming back to Primm was a large enough feat in itself, winning was even bigger. “I needed to redeem myself, I’ve been beatin myself up, and I needed this win, to get this win means a lot to the whole crew and to get back up there and not let that happen again.” Rick feels confident in his truck, after three seasons with his Tundra his crew has it figured out and most of the problems worked out. As the weekend ended it seemed that CORR has returned to its original fast paced action packed format leaving few to complain like they did for Pomona. Will Rob MacCacheren be able to hold on to his points lead going into Pomona, or will Carl Renezeder or Rickey Johnson take it from him. Many still have their eyes on CORR Rookie (but not new to racing) Jeremy McGrath saying he is already on top, and only a matter of time until he starts to win. As far as the PRO 4 points go the Fabtech Toyota driven by Rick Huesman is on top, but with Scott Douglas, Johnny Greaves, and Carl Renezeder close behind, and one thing is certain all of them will be gunning for Huesman at Pomona. We at DirtClub.com would like to tip our hats off to Jim Baldwin for putting on such a great event and congratulate this weekends winners! |
